Painted on a recent trip to South Africa visiting family, this piece is a study of a vase of fynbos which sat in the kitchen for the duration of my stay.
I had admired them throughout the trip, and one evening after dinner, I felt called to capture them in paint. There is something about the resilience of the fire resistant fynbos which makes it such a fascinating subject to paint.
The proteas in particular have this spiky, strength to their petals which contrast so highly with the flowers you find in a British garden. This piece continues an exploration into floral design and pattern – rooted in research into Victorian design traditions.
