Redwoods on the road to Penshurst 1
Oil on wood
17.5” x 14”
I’ve driven past this red wood forest many times on my way to Penshurst, always wondering how the trees got there and who had planted them. A few weeks ago, I ventured into the woods to paint these trees which had been beckoning me. As I was just finishing up painting, the owner of the woods arrived in his 4x4. I was worried he was going to tell me to leave; however, instead he welcomed me into the forest and told me the story of how the woods had come to be.
He explained how until recently, the land had been owned by the family whose ancestors started the West Ham football club. In the early 20th century, one of the sons - a keen traveller and plantsman - had travelled to America and brought back with him the redwoods which he planted in the family forest.
