Sunflower II was inspired by a recent exploration of a Matisse book.
I stumbled across the book (pictured above) when visiting my mentors studio. There was a particular sketch - so simple - just a line drawing of flowers which I just became totally obsessed with.
I spent the rest of the day creating my own responses to this piece - using flowers from the garden and photographs I have taken as references. This was one of my responses.
This particular piece was inspired by a photograph of my friend Dil in Bristol holding a sunflower. Dil loves the sun & as a result also sunflowers. These photographs holds a lot of joy & I wanted to translate that into the piece.
I wanted to see if I could equally capture this effortless quality of line to bring flowers to life. Working in black and white allowed me to focus on form and line rather than colour.
